BRITS Predictions: Were We Right?

Best Male:  DT Said: PLAN B     Actual Winner: PLAN B

Best Female: DT Said: CHERYL COLE  Actual Winner: LAURA MARLING (glad we were wrong here, we love Laura here at Dubturtle)

British Breakthrough Act: DT Said: Mumford & Sons  Actual Winner: Tinie Tempah

British Group: DT Said: Take That   Actual Winner: Take That

British Single: DT Said: Plan B She Said   Actual Winner: Tinie Tempah Pass Out
(I dont know why I said Plan B in the end, when I said Tinie would win this one on my radio show..ah well..

British Album:  DT Said: Take That Progress   Actual Winner: Mumford & Sons  Sigh No More
(pleasantly surprised here, love the Mumford album.)

International Male: DT Said: Eminem   Actual Winner:  Cee Lo
(another pleasant surprise, they must've got rid of the BRITS Rulebook that says Eminem must win..)

International Female:  DT Said: Rihanna   Actual Winner:  Rihanna
(after the year she's had, who else couldve won tbh.)

International Group: DT Said:  Arcade Fire   Actual Winner: Arcade Fire
(YES!!)

International Album: DT Said: Arcade Fire  The Suburbs   Actual Winner: Arcade Fire  The Suburbs
(YES!!!!!!!!!!)

International Breakthrough: DT Said: The National  Actual Winner:  Bieber
(and not forgetting Mike!  BRITS viewers will know what I mean..)

So all in all, a great mix of surprise winners.  Who should've won, actually won  in the end.

and now to our Performance Predictions.. half right, half wrong. we were expecting Predictable-ness..we didnt get it..

Take That opened with Kidz.  we got that right.

Plan B hit medley.  we got that right, though we said he'd do Stay Too Long - and he didnt. sadly.

Rihanna hit medley.  we got that right.

Tinie Tempah.  we said Pass Out  but he ended up doing quite a few.

Adele.  we said Rolling In The Deep, because its a CHOON and its her single.  She ended up surprising everyone with an extremely stripped Piano-and-Vocal performance, with tears at the end.

Mumford & Sons.  we said The Cave.  they ended up doing an album track "Timshel"  another stripped down, introspective performance.  Which is a break from the normal Mumford-esque Jugband hoedown stompfest.

Cee Lo.  we said Forget You.  and he did.  and Paloma Faith joined him. and it was fun, and awesome.  Dubturtle has some form of wierd crush on Paloma..we dont know why..

Arcade Fire. we said We Used To Wait.   they ended up doing Ready To Start, which is in all honesty a better one.  and they were AMAZING.  The Fire has arrived.

Evaluation: Great host, unpredictable winners, unpredictable performances, nothing went wrong, slick.
Nothing like the BRITS of yore.  The move to the 02 was a huge success.  James Corden needs to stay.  All in all, a great watch  and a great way to celebrate the awesomenessity of British Music.  even if Justin Bieber did win an award...

Grammys and that

I'm such a dedicated blogger.  I stayed up last night to watch the Grammys online.
I live in England.
Up till about 5am.  Ugh.

Basically, it wasnt a bad show at all.    Lady Gaga, just like her single, didnt live up to the hype.
I think the problem here is us. Its our fault.  Maybe we expect too much of this girl?
Maybe she is just hype after all...

Muse rocked!  They deserve all the plaudits they get!
Justin Bieber and Jaden Smith also surprised me.  We should hate these guys.  And generally I do,
but They're kids!  and they owned that stage!  That has to be respected whatever genre you're into.

Mumford And Sons. Avett Brothers. Bob Dylan.  ALL ON THE SAME STAGE.
SQUEE!!!!

Eminem and Dre was amazing, as to be expected.

I cant remember anything else, probably because I was up at 4am and not really aware of anything, so Im pretty impressed I remembered this much to be honest.

Here is the Mumford, Avett and Dylan clip as courtesy of DailyMotion:

Shellsessions: Muddy Suzuki

Muddy Suzuki
Welcome to Dubturtle's Shellsessions. This is where we profile an exciting new band for you to get your teeth into.

We introduce to you today: Muddy Suzuki. A crazily good, crazy music man.
Real name being Damo Waters.   This guy has drummed for 3 of my favourite acts.
The Electric Soft Parade. Field Music. Thomas White.

And now he's doing musicy thing on his ownsome.  And its AWESOME!!  Dubturtle approves.

In his own words?
English eccentric pop/rock-smithery, with a side order of psychedelia, lashings of nonsense, and prog for pudding.

That blurb alone should be enough to satisfy your happy glands, but if you want to hear his stuff for yourself you can do at these various sites:

You get the picture.

DUBTURTLE RECOMMENDS:- GEARSTICK CABARET

Lets all drink to Muddy Suzuki !

Rozii Chaos = Amazing

A few months ago I had the pleasure of interviewing Rozii Chaos, a very talented singer-songwriter from Southampton, En-ger-land. And it was one of the best, and easiest, interviews I've ever conducted.

Mainly in part because she's amazing.
and great. incredible, gorgeous, wonderful...
Look! Just a buy a bloody Thesaurus, look up Amazing, and all of the many, many synonyms that you will find can attributed to Rozii Chaos.

Drawing influence from people like Hayley Williams and Lights, Rozii is the future of UK based female-fronted power pop.

You can visit her website NOW - by clicking the ROZII button --------->  ROZII

And this is our interview on my radio show THE ANDY G SHOW, every Monday on Radio Wey.

No words needed, Just listen.

This made Dubturtle cry.

No shame in that.

No more words needed.

Shellsessions: Shotgun Blonde

SHOTGUN BLONDE

Welcome to Dubturtle's Shellsessions. This is where we profile an exciting new band for you to get your teeth into.

We introduce to you today: Shotgun Blonde. A 5-piece rock band from Australia

and what a 5-piece rock band from Australia they are!

Here is a video of them being good, and stuff:

Very impressive stuff indeed.

Not many bands hit that sweetspot of writing catchy songs, and also rock out badass style. and do it well.
Here is their Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/shotgunblondemusic

With them being from Australia and all, I have no idea what their popularity is like over there.  I imagine pretty big, because they're good. But if they keep writing amazing songs like 'Blondie' and 'Paint The Door Red', their hype will certainly spread beyond down under.

Lets all drink to Shotgun Blonde.

Bored This Way

The rise of Lady Gaga has been astonishing.  I'm not saying Dubturtle is the biggest fan of her music, but as a keen follower of the Top 40 its hard not to respect what she's doing.  And 2011 is the year she blossoms from New kid on the block, into the real deal.

Today has brought forth her long-awaited new single 'Born This Way' and you can listen to it:
                                HERE
Dubturtles Verdict?  Meh.

It definitely isnt what I was expecting.  This is 90's Pop right here.  2010 was the year the 80's came back into fashion.

Maybe in 2011, the 90's come back.
God help us all.

Kidnap & Ransom (not the ITV show..)

There are no genre boundaries on Dubturtle.  From Herbie Hancock to Happy Hardcore and all the lovelyness inbetween.

And so onto my first dubstep related post.  Man, i love a bit of the ol' dubstep, me.
The drops. The dirtyness. The melancholy.

Which leads me on to these guys: KIDNAP & RANSOM

They're from Guernsey. You know, the place that gave the world Matt Le Tissier, Andy Priaulx and, well, ME.

They are quickly climbing the popularity ladder, at a rate of 50 fucktons a day.

AND THEY HAVE JUST RELEASED A NEW FREE EP  'ILLUMINATION'

The Art of Junior Senior

Just look at these guys!  says it all doesn't it.

I am proud to announce that 'Junior Senior' is my ultimate guilty pleasure.
You may know them just for this song:
But there's a whole lot more to this band than just cheesy, sing-a-long twee obnoxiousness!
..okay maybe not.
but still.

I got into this band when I was going through some form of musical renaissance.  I was brought up on an endless stream of Beatles, Genesis, Kinks and Stranglers. 'Time for a change' me thought.  I heard 'Move Your Feet' on the Chris Moyles radio show one morning, and it was an instant hit in my brain and I had to get the album. My mum seemed horrified when I decided 'D-D-Don't Stop The Beat' was to be my first autonomous musical choice.  And what an album it was. Short, to the point, like a hidden jem from the 60's!
Like the Beach Boys on crack.  (I'm pretty sure the Beach Boys took crack at some point..anywho..)

But the best thing?  Everyone I know hates them.  I can't play this band anywhere because everyone thinks this band are either crass, or cheesy. or both.  and they ARE! thats the point.  But its the best thing because they're mine.  And I wouldnt change them for the world.

Dubturtle Recommends: White Trash
                                     Stranded On An Island Alone

James Blake

the first dubturtle post is dedicated to this man:

JAMES BLAKE!

I've been a fan of Blake's for a while now, before all the BBC 'Sound of' hype, but the James Blake I knew back then is very different from the James Blake that is emerging now.  I was introduced by a friend to 'Klavierwerke EP', and from there I discovered 'CMYK', and both EP's blew my mind - but it is his debut LP 'James Blake' that is truly worth fawning over.  Chilled, but hectic. Melancholic, yet peaceful. 11 tracks of ethereal gold.
If you have 'SPOTIFY' you can listen to it there: 'James Blake – James Blake'

I, personally, couldn't care less if Blake lives up to his hype or not.  I couldn't care less if he becomes a platinum-selling superstar, or gets relegated back to the underground doldrums he's emerged from,  all I care about is that this music speaks to me.  Never before have I been able to listen to an album on repeat, and still find something new with every spin.  James Blake, dubturtle salutes you.

DUBTURTLE IS BORN

hello.
and welcome to dubturtle, a new music blog.

who is the brains behind dubturtle? - Me! Andy Gibbard! a singer-songwriter and radio DJ from Surrey, England.

I love music. Simple as. and now I have an extra outlet to share said music.

I hope you enjoy La Postings.
